We were usually in bed by eight o'clock so that we could get eight hours of sleep and be up and ready to go first thing the next day. There was no TV to watch. That's where I got my discipline. My Dad was a no-nonsense guy, but a fun guy. He was someone that people really enjoyed being around. He loved to tell jokes. He also was also able to laugh at himself. A lot of people can't laugh at themselves. I feel really fortunate because a lot of people don't get to see that side of their parents; the humorous side.
There were only 12 teams in the league at that time and the competition for jobs was fierce. Making an NBA team was not an easy task back then. The characteristics that helped Clem survive in the NBAknowledge of the game, tough-mindedness, commitment, accountability and a true love of the gamehave also served him well in becoming a great coach. Back in those days we were fierce competitors on the court, but very supportive of one another off the court. During those times in the NBA we were still fighting for decent salaries, medical benefits, a pension plan and so forth.
She has always enjoyed having dogs around too, especially St. Bernards, which are her favorite. I think she's had four St. Bernards in all, but she's only used two names: King and Baby. One was named King and when it passed away, the next one was named Baby, and when that one died, the next one was named King again.
