Bilingualism and biculturalism are elements in many of these cartoons, certainly topics worthy of study. Perhaps readers can explore the attitudes and emotions that many in the Latino community felt over the last decade, as expressed through my work. (9) Tales of the Closet, Volume 1 In My Darkest Hour an overview of latino comics  Migra Mouse: Political Cartoons on Immigration Alcaraz, however, also complicates the representational map; for instance, he pokes fun at Latinos in the strip “How to Spot a Mexican Dad,” which depicts a tattooed Chicano drinking a beer and eating stale chicharrones in a La-Z-Boy (22).

The series makes several moves to complicate Latino identity and experience. For instance, not only do the writers create a Latina, La Dama, as the big capitalist exploiter of the economic imbalance between Mexico and the United States, but we learn in issue 8 that Jaime’s sidekick, Paco, has to take a makeup class because he flunked Spanish for speaking Spanglish. There is also a stretched panel depicting Jaime and Paco crossing the border from the United States. ²⁰ Comic book publishers other than DC and Marvel have created Latino characters—even some complete storyworlds.

This is most clearly seen in Fredric Wertham’s Seduction of the Innocent (1954), which identified comic books as sources of increased teen suicide, queer sexuality, and procommunist sentiment; the study led to the establishment of a self-censoring machine—there would be no more Batman or Robin, sexual innuendo, scantily clad women, or violence under the 1950s Comics Code. However, we see this also in one form or another in scholarly discussions and fan-mail responses, or when a Latino author-artist like Richard Dominguez declares an urgent need for the circulation of positive Latino role models.
