Contrary to arguments put forth by whites, “the problem of black middle-class riders in first-class cars . . was less that whites feared ‘racial pollution’ than that the visible dress and deportment of these travelers belied any notion of southern blacks’ racial inferiority,” according to Hale.
Making the segregation system even worse, in most instances the facilities blacks were forced to use were not only separate, but most times inferior to those of whites.
