Belo & Co. had sold the Galveston newspaper, the Klan boasted publicly that it was running A. H. Belo & Co. out of business. In the 1924 governor’s race, the powerful but controversial former governor James E. Ferguson, who had been impeached and barred by the Texas Senate from holding state office again, took a firm stand against the Klan and fielded a candidate in his place, his own wife, Miriam “Ma” Ferguson. The Klan’s candidate was Felix Robertson, a Dallas district judge. It was an awkward move for the Dallas Morning News, which had supported barring Governor Ferguson from further elected office, but the newspaper forcefully backed Mrs.

The Dallas assignment established the direction for the rest of G. B. Dealey’s life. His young wife remained in Galveston briefly, because their first child had been born in early 1885. They ultimately had five children, three daughters and two sons, each of whom was to play a part, one way or another, in establishing the modern Belo Corp. In late 1885, Belo and his family also moved to Dallas in order to focus on getting the paper off to the right start. However, as he spent much of the time seeking medical treatments or a better climate elsewhere, Belo continued to entrust the business operations of the Dallas Morning News to G.

He was wise beyond his years as a young man, and energetic for change and growth throughout his long life. He lived to be eighty-six years old, and he never lost interest in his newspaper or his city. Following the lead of his predecessors,Willard Richardson and A. H. Belo, G.
