IPhone & ProCamera This picture was taken in the Wonderland Nightclub, London, using an iPhone with ProCamera. ProCamera has a night mode which allows you to select a slow shutter speed. Unfortunately, the iPhone 5 doesn’t have a full optical image stabilisation system, so ProCamera won’t let you use an extra slow shutter speed if raising the ISO is at all viable. In this case it limited my shot to an ISO of 400 – notice how the picture isn’t as colourful as it could be, due to the higher ISO. I asked my subject to keep very still, as if she were playing musical statues, because I was using a slow shutter speed.
You control the amount of motion blur by adjusting the shutter speed: the slower the shutter, the more motion you capture. The following picture was taken at a festival, using an extra-slow shutter. The lights were flashing, creating a cool strobe-like effect as my subject turned his head. You could keep your finger on the shutter release button and take fifty shots in a row rather than firing in short controlled bursts, but that would be risky. Focusing the camera and hitting the right exposure can be very difficult in low light because the camera doesn’t have much light to see by.
I was taking pictures of tourists when I spotted a group of friends taking pictures of each other using a flash. I knew that if I fired in short controlled bursts with a slow shutter speed there was a pretty good chance of me catching their camera flash. Notice how the girl’s face is overexposed, and far too blue compared to the background. This is because flash light tends to be very intense, and surprisingly blue; the camera’s white balance normally corrects this, but my camera wasn’t expecting to see another camera’s flash mid exposure, so didn’t correct it.
