Ferguson, who had been impeached and barred by the Texas Senate from holding state office again, took a firm stand against the Klan and fielded a candidate in his place, his own wife, Miriam “Ma” Ferguson. The Klan’s candidate was Felix Robertson, a Dallas district judge. It was an awkward move for the Dallas Morning News, which had supported barring Governor Ferguson from further elected office, but the newspaper forcefully backed Mrs.
The Dallas assignment established the direction for the rest of G. B. Dealey’s life. His young wife remained in Galveston briefly, because their first child had been born in early 1885.
