His attention was drawn more and more to the Wiltshire Downs, to their barrows, to Stonehenge and to Silbury Hill. In 1886, he made a careful survey of the Silbury Hill area and, by means of excavation, proved to his complete satisfaction that the Roman road diverged before it reached the Hill and that it had therefore been erected long before the time of the Romans. He was also able to show that the available evidence pointed to Stonehenge being a monument of the Bronze Age, while Avebury was still older.

For many years he was a great figure in the University of Cambridge.
