Haggard’s message was popular with those who still idealized the British imperial cause; but there were dissenters even so. In August 1887, writing under the name of ‘Gavin Ogilvy’ for the British Weekly, J. M. Barrie delivered this condemnation: ‘Allan Quatermain tells the adventures of three worthless old men, who go to Africa and slay there thousands of human beings. ) It would have been a nobler part to stay at home and hire themselves out to butchers’ (Higgins, 117). Nevertheless, Haggard continued to write best-selling romance well into the twentieth century: the formula clearly worked.
Athleticism was elevated and intellectualism almost ignored: ‘Investigators of the literature of public school life will look in vain for the hero as intellectual, dilettante or cosmopolitan. The heroes of the time were, in Kipling’s words, “Gentlemen of England, cleanly bred”. 21 This is true of Haggard’s heroes and also of Henty’s boys, who are never intellectual, but instead display physical prowess and courage; and, as we shall see in discussing Lord Jim, it is the ideal of conduct that Jim signally fails to live up to.
The hero of imperial romance thus exemplified the qualities of gentlemanly conduct, Christian morality, patriotism, and the pure Anglo-Saxon racial attributes that were the desired outcome of a public school education. In short, the hero of the imperial romance was England’s ideal imperial son: through his adventures he proved his superiority and that of his race; his ultimate triumph was an enactment of a nineteenth-century England’s will to imperial dominance. The success of Haggard’s novels affirms what many of his contemporary readers wanted to hear about the Empire.
